For the Geneva International Motor Show, the automaker will add a layer of retro to the 500; the Vintage ’57 edition is going back to the era of dog-dish hubcaps and pastel paint.
A few manufacturers have tried to recapture the emblematic style of vehicles that left their mark on the automotive industry; from the Volkswagen Beetle to the Chrysler PT Cruiser, the Chevrolet HHR and the MINI, each had their own ideas about how to recreate the iconic images of their older models.
Called Vintage ’57, the latest limited-edition 500 was designed as a homage to the original rear-engined 500 that debuted in Turin, Italy, on July 4th, 1957. It gains a pastel blue paint job with contrasting white paint on the roof, the mirror caps and the rear spoiler, as well as edition-specific 16-inch alloy wheels that look like the 12-inch steel wheels that were fitted to the 500 between 1957 and 1975.
A modern interpretation of the logo that Fiat used during the 1960s rounds out the exterior updates. The retro-inspired look continues inside with a white dashboard and two-tone leather upholstery on the seats.
In Europe, Vintage ’57 buyers will be asked to choose between a 69-horsepower 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine and a 0.9-liter two-cylinder Twin Air mill available with either 65, 85 or 105 horsepower. Motorists who prefer oil-burners will be able to select a 95-horsepower 1.3-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine.
The 2015 Fiat 500 Vintage ’57 will go on sale across Europe in the coming months. Fiat has not revealed how much of a premium it will carry over the standard 500 or how many examples it will build.
Similarly, whether or not the 500 Vintage ’57 will cross the Atlantic and land in North American showrooms is up in the air.
