The incredible open concept kitchen you’re about to see wasn’t always that lovely and stylish. In fact, when a young couple purchased their modern craftsman-style home in Georgetown, Texas, they knew they would need to give a complete makeover to the place. And that was when all this home renovation started…
Designer Matt Tsang helped the couple create an open kitchen that now includes an eye-catching backsplash, natural elements and mixed metals to give some warmth and depth.
“The brass knobs added a glam warmth to the space, and they work perfectly with the backsplash,” Tsang says. “Adding that detail helps the room avoid feeling flat with all those cabinets on the back wall.”
The updated color palette includes light gray walls, a white ceiling and a beautiful tile backsplash in a soft sea-glass hue. The base of the island has a rich gray color that helps anchor the room.

Tsang demolished the previous kitchen, pantry and laundry area to create a more efficient floor plan. Removing the old peninsula and pony wall allowed him to extend the kitchen to the former breakfast nook and open it more to the living room.
A wood-look porcelain tile floor offers durability and warm tones. The tile extends into the living room, which was previously carpeted, making the perfect transition between the two areas.
The updated living room’s style is transitional, with two brown leather club chairs, a gray sofa, a brass coffee table with oval frame and claw feet, and a handwoven gray area rug. “It’s such an open concept, the spaces had to really play off one another,” Tsang says. “They’re now truly the heart of the home.”
From dated to modern scandinavian… This house and the owners couldn’t have asked for better result, this was a truly successful renovation!
