Laufen, Design Intelligence
12:00 p.m.

Design moves in a field of tension between art, architecture and emotion. In the case of the bathroom space, the products are serious – almost part of the architecture, and strongly connected to the building itself. Successful design is defined by sustainability, functionality and importantly lasting aesthetics, as they are not easy to change with fashion changes. To understand the process of bathroom design involves not only the properties of the materials used but also the production processes and know-how of the manufacturer.

Design and the Hand
11:00 a.m.

Women in the midcentury often collaborated with industry, in an era when a “handcrafted look” warmed the rigorous geometry of modernism. This panel considers parallels with today’s design field, in which “handmade” has become a marker of good design.

Moderator: Jennifer Scanlan, Curator

Jennifer Scanlan is a New York-based independent curator focusing on contemporary art and design. Her next exhibition “Pathmakers: Women in Art, Craft, and Design, Midcentury, and Today,” will be on view at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, from April 27 – September 28, 2015, after which it travels to the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.

Panel: Will include both established and emerging designers, company owners represented at ICFF, journalists, and scholars of design history.
