Terrazzo flooring was incredibly popular in the ’70s and was usually used in schools, airports and public buildings. But now that this once-groovy material is more beautiful than ever and is making its way back into our lives as a fresh option for countertops, furniture, backsplashes, shower surfaces, and more.

The inexpensive flooring material made from shards of marble and granite set in concrete was originated in Europe in the 15th century as a way to use leftover pieces of marble to create cheap flooring.

The design didn’t take off until more modern electric grinding equipment was invented in 1924, which made it possible to give the surface a brilliant and smooth finish.

The highly durable surface is now the perfect way to add some color and pizzazz to a bathroom, kitchen, patio, staircase, or floor.

Many designers today use compositions that feature large and chunky pieces, which are more eye-catching and resemble modern artwork.

If you love the look, but don’t want to invest in countertops or flooring made from the material, you can infuse the trend more subtly into your home with printed wallpaper, lamps, side tables, or kitchenware.
