Brooklyn Industrial Loft Features Exposed Beams and Concrete Counters

Today we’re going to show you a dazzling Brooklyn industrial loft with wooden structural elements that were uncovered and retreated during renovation work undertaken by local studio General Assembly. Keep scrolling and get inspired!

This loft apartment is located in the typically industrial West Brooklyn neighborhood of Gowanus. The area included the transformation of a factory into a colorful co-working space and a house shielded by a metal mesh screen.

“This loft in a former jute mill was in a state of disrepair when we got our hands on it,” said General Assembly. “Our approach was to combine many of the original elements with modern touches to create a space with a clean, contemporary, yet raw feeling.”

Hanna is a vintage pendant light which suits perfectly in every single modern Scandinavian living room. Its structure is made in brass and is elegantly composed by five lampshades made of aluminum.

In order to prevent the light from reaching some of the key spaces, the studio decided to form an open-plan living, dining and kitchen space at one end. Therefore, they took advantage of the natural sunlight from the window-wall encompassing one full side of the apartment.

The bedroom, bathroom and office space are each enclosed at the other end of the property, with sliding doors used to converse space where necessary. The designers exposed the chunky wooden columns and beams that support the pitched ceiling made from timber.

The renovation of the space included concrete counters and a black paper stone breakfast bar, with sides covered in gray tiles laid to form a chevron pattern.

Hexagonal tiles on the kitchen floor also cover the bathroom walls. Polished concrete was chosen for the rest of the flooring. “Brighter elements like rift white oak cabinetry work to further reflect the light and contribute to the feeling of open airiness throughout,” the studio said.
