The Cypriot Designer has since 2007 established itself in the world of lighting design with a unique point of view when it comes to lighting design. The Designer of The Year 2020 brings us a soft and fresh set into the world of design.

Know as the lighting poet, Michael Anastassiades was born in Cyprus, and has moved to the United Kingdom, London, when he was 20 years old. In 1994, he founded his studio, however it was in 2007 that he decided to established himself in the world of lighting design with a unique point of view. In that same year, he participated for the first time in Maison et Objet Paris, and 13 years after, he was back with the special exhibition Sixteen Acts.
Each piece of the designer’s work has a simplicity to it. With simple shapes and volumes, the language of the Michael Anastassiades works are a labour of passion and love. Simple yet astounding, the designer’s creations are meant to create interactions between people and objects.

“For me, it is important to always show something different, make sure that what I design explores a new idea, uses new technology in a poetic way. I try to approach the practice with generosity and with an awareness of what came before. Lighting is my passion but I don’t feel limited in what I do as a designer, so I am happy to be surprised and have the opportunity of designing differ-ent things”.

When mentioning the work of the last twelve years, the designer of the year has spent a large amount of time processing what inspiration and the design process is. “It is only when you place every-thing randomly that you understand that the creative act extends beyond evolution and that instinct and spontaneity can surpass knowledge.”
